VINIMARK 2019 TRADE & MEDIA FAIR
Updated: Oct 1, 2019
Vinimark host an annual Trade & Media Fair in Cape Town, Johannesburg, Pretoria, Port Elizabeth and Durban of which I had the privilege to attend in Cape Town at the CTICC a few weeks ago. It is no surprise that they are the largest independent wine specialist in South Africa with marketing, distributing and selling more than 50 of the country’s best-known wine brands.
They made sure guests were spoilt for choice - with a wine and Méthode Cap Classique stand (or imported Champagne) in every corner of your eye, passionate viticulturists and wine makers and friendly CTICC staff who intermittently pop in with a platter of decorative and delicate canapés. One tends to easily get lost at an event that showcases such a vast range of outstanding wines and would generally gravitate towards varietals that the palate is familiar with. Then again, this is what the Vinimark Trade & Media Fair is made for - taking the palate on a journey of exploration and magical vino moments.
I gave myself the freedom to opt for something different other than just my usual Merlot and I was pleasantly surprised by all the wines on offer. A few standouts (amongst others) were the following :
- Constitution Road Shiraz 2015 (such a nice well-balanced and not too spicy Shiraz)
- Reyneke Biodynamic Organic Syrah 2017 (a more spicy wine, but elegant red)
- The Muratie Range (especially the story behind each wine. I particularly enjoyed the Alberta Annemarie Merlot 2016 and Melck's Red Blend 2015). The passion of the team behind each story was quite evident in every sip. The Red Blend is stylish and easy drinking - not too heavy and harsh with tannins.
- The ultimate standout wine which also seemed to be a favourite amongst other wine lovers, was the FLAGSTONE Dark Horse Shiraz 2015 - so smooth and perfectly well-balanced. I think the accolades speaks volumes for this wine!
